Prosecco Superiore DOCG / Variety

Variety Until 2009 Prosecco was the name of the vine from which the celebrated wine of the same name was produced. With the new regulations the name of the vine has become Glera while Prosecco denotes a defined area of a few zones in the north east of Italy, and the wine that can be produced within this area.

The highest quality wine comes from the zone that is naturally the best for producing these grapes, with its perfect soil composition, exposure to the sun and tradition alongside a genuine culture for hillside vines. This is the only place where Prosecco is Superiore. The grapes come from vines cultivated in an area of controlled denomination made up of the 15 municipalities between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. The variety must be at least 90% Glera but a small percentage of Verdiso, Perera and Bianchetta is accepted, lesser varieties which are complimentary to the Glera grape.

The wine is made in wineries located in the area of controlled and guaranteed denomination. Conegliano Valdobbiadene Docg Prosecco Superiore is available in semi-sparkling and still versions but it is the sparkling, or Spumante, for which it is best known.
